huh. I guess I lived in an exceptional neighborhood. I miss it more than ever. :(

I'm that 'grumpy old guy on the corner'. Not that I am grumpy, or mean, but I tend to keep to myself unless someone needs me. Few neighbors talk to me. It didn't help that shortly after I moved in, MIB came around asking about me...but that was for a job.
I am lucky; my two adjacent neighbors are great. Between the three of us, we have about 18 acres with a few good neighbors down the road. We would take pretty good care of each other.
"Are you Crazy?"
No, but I *am* a carrier.
:D
So anyone who has lived in the LA/So Cal, area, where would you go in this situation if you had zero preps for something like this? I've lived in the OC and on one side you have the ocean, the other is the mountains, to the north is bigger and worse urban area, and to the south is Pendleton and then SD/Mexico.
Obviously most people would think to go to the desert as in the show but half of the population is doing that. Those roads getting over the mountains will be bottle necks and unpassable. I say that is pointless and you will be zombie dinner within a day or two.
Going north is out unless you are already on the northside of the urban area which our clueless cast is not. It's a long way to get up the coast to open areas and less people and then you are also dealing with all the San Fran folks fleeing south.
South seems like the best option as Pendleton may be your best safe zone that you could get to. Maybe if you are lucky, you could even get over those mountains on the east side of Pendleton but then you are stuck in one of the hottest places on the planet, so unless your goal is the military base, you are just as screwed going that way as if you went straight for the mountains and into the desert.
One that I am sure no one will talk about is take a boat out to Catalina. Sure water will be a problem as it would be anywhere, but at least out there you would not have the masses of people and water could be found. Also a boat gives the ability to travel a bit more freely maybe cruising the coast line up toward some remote harbor in the North West eventually.
Personally, I would steal a plane from one of the local airports and fly out to northern Nevada, Southern Utah, or Western Colorado and enjoy life out there away from anyone, but that is me :)
I think staying on a yacht might be nice. Could be pretty safe too. Assuming zombies don't swim.
Well, I'm fairly familiar with the LA area... they are F*cked. Only chance to survive an event that evolves this quickly is to get out on day one, traveling in a nearly straight line away from the center of the city (if you live by Anneheim, go South. If you live by Hollywood, go north, etc.) No "riding out the night while waiting for stepdad to get home with his kids". Once outside of LA proper, avoid highways at all costs and keep going. Don't look back. Don't plan on going back. Try to make it to a neighboring state if possible. A small island would be sweet if it was sustainable.
ETA: If you lived by San Bernadino, you might REALLY be F*cked... only two highways out of there over the mountains. Best bet might be to hole up in a defensible (wealthy) neighborhood backed up to the mountains with other like-minded folks after pulling those super deadly high-capacity cop-killing magazines out from under the floorboards. ;)
