Well, I'm fairly familiar with the LA area... they are F*cked. Only chance to survive an event that evolves this quickly is to get out on day one, traveling in a nearly straight line away from the center of the city (if you live by Anneheim, go South. If you live by Hollywood, go north, etc.) No "riding out the night while waiting for stepdad to get home with his kids". Once outside of LA proper, avoid highways at all costs and keep going. Don't look back. Don't plan on going back. Try to make it to a neighboring state if possible. A small island would be sweet if it was sustainable.
ETA: If you lived by San Bernadino, you might REALLY be F*cked... only two highways out of there over the mountains. Best bet might be to hole up in a defensible (wealthy) neighborhood backed up to the mountains with other like-minded folks after pulling those super deadly high-capacity cop-killing magazines out from under the floorboards. ;)
