I suppose that's so a person can admire all the carnage they leave in their wake?
I think the lower left picture explains it though. Silly Canadians. Aren't they the ones with the 1000m sight on their HiPower pistols?

And looking at the pictures again, I don't think it's for peeking around corners. Probably more for keeping an eye on your buddies movements behind you.
