Designers - on their own or requested by their bosses or a client - will do things such as rotating images and mirroring them so that they fit the design of an ad, often without an understanding of when such a manipulation will look odd to people.
That is in complete contrast to a product photographer working unsupervised and having no knowledge of how a bullet goes into a magazine (the HK cover image). That was also a failure of whoever approved the cover - which very well could have been someone at an ad agency with the same lack of knowledge. If HK got to approve the cover before going to press, that's shameful.
What about the guitar, though?
She's fingering the fretboard as though she were holding the guitar with the strings going away from her and where she'd be strumming the strings is in the air away from the guitar itself.
Ok, I mocked it up in Photoshop to illustrate how its wrong.
THIS is how she's "playing" the guitar in the ad.

Yep. That's how it looks... awkward
She's not playing it, she's swinging it like a club...
That's how it looks at a glance, but she isn't.
I think I saw that same girl hugging a cushion at a match once!
No. Her index finger is closest to the nut and her pinky is toward the bridge. It?s right. What makes it look weird is the downward angle.
