The man who inspired the movie "Catch Me if you Can" spoke at CSU some years back and told people that if you look like you're supposed to be there, people tend to assume it's true. He saw businesses in an airport depositing their cash down a chute at the airport bank, so he got a guard uniform, and the next night had a sign "Chute broken, leave deposits with guard." I saw a guy in a service department uniform walk into a Sears and pick up an outboard motor and walk right out of the store, put it in the back of a truck and drive away. I took down the license plate number and a description of the truck and gave it to the sporting goods department manager. He did not believe me until he checked his inventory and yep, there was a motor missing.
Thieves suck.
Just remember how generally stupid, non-observant, and unaware most of the people are. If you ever fell on hard times and were desperate to survive tricking people is super easy.
