I'm basically on clay. I'm thinking I'm going to scrape off a nice and level spot, then tamp it down really hard with my spud bar, then just lay down some large pavers to make a pad. I could also use gravel, but I'd have to come up with some kind of edging so the gravel doesn't spill into the yard. I want the base to be just above ground level so my wife can easily get the mower in and out if she has to mow.

Okay I can put some sand down. Back in the midwest I'd have to put down a couple inches of gravel under the sand. Here not so sure...
