I don't like roundabouts. I have no problem using them, I just don't like them. Funny...the modern roundabout really began in the UK. The UK is now deciding roundabouts create as many problems as they solve and they're replacing many of them with traffic lights. The US is really starting to embrace roundabouts. Perfect example of what goes around, comes around.
I see roundabouts as an opportunity to brush up on my drifting skills.
Roundabouts, (or Rotaries as they are known in New England area) have been used for a while in the eastern US. I grew up running rotaries and never saw the problems they cause out here. However, there were two big differences. Back east the rotaries are much larger in diameter and there isn't a bunch of crap in the middle. If you can see across the whole circle and don't have to drop much speed going around because of the larger radius, they work great. The tiny ones here with some sort of monument or bigazz landscaping in the middle only allow you to see over your shoulder for the split second of traffic time, so everyone practically comes to a stop every time. Clearwater florida put in a circle out at the beach (spent millions building the damn thing) and within a matter of months deemed it a hazard and tore it all out. The problem? too small diameter for busses to negotiate and a huge fountain in the middle so you couldn't see across to judge traffic openings.Quote:
