Movie Thread

Aquaman and Captain Marvel were entertaining.

AMC A+ makes it much easier to go watch movies that I wouldn't otherwise go to the theater and watch.

I saw Captain Marvel last night. Pretty good movie. I thought the main character's acting was a little lacking, but enjoyed the story and all the 90s pop culture references and music. I thought the big fight at the end was a little meh, but loved the mid credits scene.

The Wife and I both enjoyed Capt. Marvel. Treating our Flerkels with much more respect and caution now, however.

The title character wins the fight, sorry to say.

Went and saw the Apollo 11 documentary that's in IMAX a few days ago.

It's astoundingly good. All of the footage was shot originally on 70mm film, and as a result it's gorgeous. There's no narration, all of the audio is from sound clips that were recorded at the time.

A lot of the footage has never been seen before, and watching a Saturn V light off in IMAX is hugely impressive.

It's a fantastic reminder of what America can do when we decide to accomplish something.

We saw it in IMAX as well. It was interesting that the Chappaquiddick manslaughter case was ongoing during the flight to the moon. Ironic that one brother called for the moon mission and another brother killed a woman just before the mission. Sadly I am not confident that our nation could bring such resolve to any similar task today. There were so many people who watched that mission and made it happen. I am hopeful that private industry can make something out of orbital travel and one day we may return to space.

I was fairly surprised they mentioned Ted Kennedy's screwup at all during the movie, given that CNN's documentary section was one of the producers.

As to US spaceflight, NASA has become far too hidebound and risk averse to do anything cutting edge on the human spaceflight front. Couple that with the fact that funding for NASA is often times coupled with various politician's pet pork projects, and it's unsurprising they haven't done anything with HSF beyond the ISS.

Thankfully, private space industry is on the cusp of reinvigorating US space. SpaceX has successfully made the first test of the passenger version of Dragon 2, Elon Musk is moving incredibly fast on the development of the Starship test hopper, and Bezos and Branson have also been successfully testing flights of their vehicles to the edge of space.
