DPMS 308???

Not to hijack this thread, but I have one with a sixteen inch barrel, and I'm thinking about swapping to an 18 or 20". Would I have to get a longer gas tube if I do this? What makes and where would I go to get one at a reasonable price?

I have a 24" stainless fluted heavy bbl. slick side.

Shoots sub MOA (.7-.8). Needs a better trigger and is quite heavy, even with that consideration it's my favorite rifle to shoot.

1 FTE so far, in about 500 rounds fired.

Good possibility you will need to purchase a longer gas tube. The 16" barrels use a carbine gas tube, but an 18" barrel is mid-length. Most replacement 308 barrels are 16, 18 or 24" but expect there are some custom/higher end 20" barrel lengths, which are probably rifle length gas setups.

What kind of budget do you have for the new barrel and what do you plan on doing with it? Additional 2" of barrel length doesn't give you much inside of 600 yards and I've seen guys ring steel at 1000 yards with a DPMS 308 Oracle with its 16in barrel. That said, I prefer a 18" barrel in my 308 AR.

You can get a DPMS SASS or SST 18" barrel for less than $300 new, plus Fulton Armory/Criterion has some around that price point, but slightly higher than DPMS. Krieger, JP Enterprises and other custom barrel manufacturers also offer them but price nearly doubles for them.

Thanks for the information guys. I am hoping to build it into a decent tack driver. Although I may just leave it as is too, and pick up a rem 700 and build it up. I would eventually like to start shooting in long range comps.
