Get a couple of gay (male) friends.. When I need to look nice I always have them come over and pick out my outfits.. Shit I would never think works, but magically when its on its awesome..
I have some difficulty determining color shades, and generically poor fashion sense. So when I had to buy a half dozen sport coats, jackets, ties, and pants, I had the sales person lay out all the combinations that were appropriate, then I took pictures of them. Also labelled each pair of pants, as I cannot see the distinction between the olive colored ones and the chocolate ones, nor the difference between navy blue and black.
I will second the idea of finding a gay guy with good fashion sense. Unlike women, they both know what looks good and what it feels like to wear it. If you want expert advise on what looks good on a man, go to the experts.
