When I did my inprocessing into the CO Army NG we had a short history lesson on the CO militias and NG. Basically what I took from it was that the first 50 plus years the militias and Guard were hired thugs used to subdue Indian settlements and enforce laws that were paid for by large monetary interests, usually from out of state.
