Accidental mixing of common cleaning chemicals. Granulated chlorine used for pools and spas contaminated with any alkali or acid would do it.

Edit to add: To see this, just pee in a toilet that someone has bleach in to clean it. Be prepared to flush it in a hurry, as the bubbles are nearly pure chlorine gas.

You don't even have to mix chemicals accidentally. Pour too much Kaboom! toilet cleaner in the bowl and you'll get more than a whiff. A conventioneer trying to clean or bleach some white "fur" could have done it.

I read elsewhere that it was a powder, and was dumped in a stairwell. Someone on 4chan was bragging about it, he's now being interviewed by the FBI.

Probably a mishap with the gallons of bleach the hotel stocked up on to sanitize after the convention climax.

Should have locked the doors.
