Oh, please. You recompile the raspbian image from source, first, then write images to SD cards.
jeez!
LOL well I suppose you could. But no, we just dropped the Retro Pie image right on the SD card using an imaging tool.
There were several guides going over it, and honestly after reading a lot of them, I was expecting to spend more time teaching the kids about everything, but honestly it just worked out of the box, even the USB game controllers.
Tweaked it a bit after, but that was about it.
Here, for example:

Sometime this winter, I'm going to build a homebrew keezer/kegerator. Raspberry Pints is the next project on the list.

Maybe I'll wander over to Microcenter this week and see if they have any of those $5 Pi Zeros in stock.
I'm pondering getting the touch screen that goes with them and making a touch panel to turn on/off all my truck lights
Pretty neat little device actually. Run cameras, ftp's, learn coding, make a retro pi (old school games). I have a ton of stuff that's I'd probably sell if anyone wants to get into it.
I'm tempted to get a Raspberry Pi to make a Magic Mirror, https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/magic-mirror/ . I'm backing the PINE A64 on kickstarter, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...d-super-comput . For this one I plan to turn it into an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and throw it on my home network. Unlike the Raspberry Pi's the A64 has gig ethernet and it isn't using a USB bus, so my home network won't overload the poor little board.
Likely as my kids get older we'll do robotic projects with them, and who knows what else.
