I just had to cut down our tree out front and this is why I did it myself along with the four Willow hybrids that were out back a couple of summers ago. It's a PITA but at least if something is effed up I have only myself to blame. Chances are though that I'll do a satisfactory job even though I'm not a pro and I'm amazed at the work 'pros' consider acceptable at times.
Now, how do you plan to handle the stump? Speaking of pros... I had a guy come grind my four stumps down out back last year and was entirely unimpressed with his work. Turns out it was a guy I used to lift weights with nearly two decades ago when I moved here and life hasn't been kind to him since and I almost felt guilted into paying him for a job I felt wasn't completed to our agreement before he started. I wanted to plant trees again and instead I ended up doing a raised garden there and planted lilacs in another row several feet away. I've got a stump out front and I'm debated hooking up the winch after trying to cut some of the roots below ground level, trying to rent a stump grinder and doing it myself or getting some dynamite and pissing off my neighbors and getting arrested.
