Rattle Snake Safety

I did a Hog Shoot/Hunt in SE Georgia a couple weeks ago and was told to bring Snake Boots or Gators. I went with the Gators since I couldn't find Snake Boots locally and the cost was close to $200.00.
Selection was limited and I went with these: http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.com/s...2894/cat101638 and wore a pair of Whites Packer Boots. They're pretty loose fitting and didn't seem to be to warm to wear. For shit's and grins I wore them this past weekend (90*+) while wearing shorts and running a string trimmer and they cooler to wear than a pair of BDU's or Jeans.

If your looking for them, you will find them in the Pawnee Grass lands. They like to lay out in the sun, exposed areas like dirt road tracks are hotspots. I do everything I can to avoid them... Had a close call with my buddies dog, big guy was coiled up rattling and ready to strike. And I have seen a couple little guys (it's the little ones that can really get you) laying out on the dirt roads late afternoon. They camouflage very well.

BTW- belly stalks in the grasslands I would be wearing a hockey helmet with a plexiglass face shield....

By some miracle, I've been around every species of rattlesnake except for Crotalus catalinensis (and we certainly tried to get one of those) without the slightest incident. In decades of having dozens of rattlesnakes, I've yet to be bitten. A 4wt graphite fly rod is more than enough to convince one to crawl the other way. Yep, it boggles the mind...

I think of myself as a pretty manly man....until today when I looked down and was standing on a garter snake. If anyone thought their 8 yr old daughter was squealing, well, no comment.

Ya some of those stalks were even in the grasslands and though sometimes I found their trails I never ran into them.. And belly stalks weren't the smartest but I will get a Colorado Spot and stalk pronghorn with my bow someday dang it!

Killed this one at work the other day. Work is just south of Parker along Hwy. 83. We seem to kill one, some times two a year. Got lots of bull snakes around too, but they get a pass.

I have killed two this year south of Fountain, CO at work. They give me chills down my spine.
