Colorado State Patrol Trooper Killed on I-25

Here is the ODMP Reflection

Trooper Cody Donahue was struck and killed by a commercial vehicle on northbound I-25, at Tomah Road, near Castle Rock.

He was investigating a minor traffic crash when the commercial vehicle struck him while he was outside of his patrol car with another trooper. He was wearing a reflective vest at the time he was struck.

Trooper Donahue had served with the Colorado State Patrol for 11 years. He is survived by his wife and two young children.

This is terrible. Just terrible.

I dont know what happened in this situation, but I see this all the time: LEO has a guy pulled over on a busy road and the cop is hanging out right next to the driver side door and traffic is zipping by just a few feet from him as he waits for the citizen to fumble through his crap and find the right paperwork. Every time I see that I shake my head.

Is it not time that cops make contact from the passenger side of the car? I assume this would make it easier to see what is going on in the car also, as the door is not blocking the view as much? I have never made a traffic stop and I can count on one hand the times I have been pulled over, but every time I have always driven to the next parking lot and out of traffic.

Honest question for any LEOs out there? Is anyone looking into a better method or operating practice of keeping you guys less exposed to traffic?

Really sad news.

What a horrible day. It always hurts to lose an LEO, but it really hits home when they are a friend. Cody was a great guy, amazing father and very selfless. He loved what he did, going to miss him more than I can express.

If California does anything right, it's this. They always keep the vehicle between themselves and the rest of traffic.

So sad to hear. I was out and about and saw that I-25 was just a mess, when I got home I turned on the news to see what was up my first thought was "Again?!?".
