The exact same scenario happened to me in San Antonio around 1991. Lunch time, ringing the bell multiple times, goes around back. He hopped my privacy fence and was attempting to open my sliding door with a large screwdriver when he looked up and noticed me with a shotgun trained on him. The cops caught him a couple of blocks away.
Is there an asshole thief procedure book out there somewhere?

Glad your family is safe, and hope the perp is found and the hammer is laid upon him. The wife and I just got into an argument minutes ago, because she recklessly whips the front door open at any noise or knock, without looking in the peep hole. If she was in your wife's shoes, she may have been starring down the barrel of a gun. Scares the hell out of me.
