I have looked high and low but I cannot find a coherent explanation either.

free trade is almost never beneficial, particularly when it's done with trade partners who have what is essentially slave labor on their side, no overly reaching environmental adherence standards, and they are allowed to pump cargo ships worth of cheaply produced crap into your economic market.
If there were a situation where Country X had a $resource1 and/or product which could not be produced by Country Y, who had $resource2 with the same effect.... then sure. Otherwise, tariff the crap out of all international players and hold domestic industry to a standard
Trump has stated many times that he likes free trade, but no-one else abides by it, so we are going America 1st. Sounds good to me.
I get some premise of the whole labeling America as an Imperialistic, forcing our will on others, and lets face facts, America has acted atrociously at times in our history. But, in most of those cases, we paid dearly for it. In others, not so much.
I like the path Trump is on so far, and lets face it as well, if there was a "D" after his name, those calling him the devil incarnate would be cheering him.
