It also surprises me that a place in Texas actually has these signs up. Never been there but you always here how pro gun they are. Mall must be owned by someone out of state or something.

This.
As soon as Texas started allowing concealed carry in the 1990's the signs started popping up at lots of local businesses. I knew a lot of people who started boycotting those places.
Also, prior to the establishment of a concealed carry system, your home was pretty much the only place you could have a handgun was in your home. There was no open carry, no legal concealed carry, and having a handgun in your vehicle was a big no-no.
You guys are going to get me to defend Texas?
A lot of this is corporate policy (less Austin, of course). The corporate lawyers promote this thinking to reduce liability. That won't change until there is successful litigation on "gun free zones" and safety vacuums.
That almost happened to Century Theaters over the Aurora murders although "gun free zone" was never listed in the complaint. We had a good discussion here about that.
At another mall in SA:

Quote:
SAN ANTONIO, TX — Police have responded to a possible shooting near the Ingram Park Mall late Tuesday morning, just two days after another local mall shooting resulting in a fatality and several injuries.
According to various media outlets, the call came in at about 11:33 a.m. amid reports of shots fired along the 6300 block of Northwest Loop 410. The San Antonio Express-News reports that police are now searching for two armed suspects who allegedly threatened to kill a mother and daughter outside the mall being firing shots and fleeing.
Free kill zones, aka "Gun Free Zones", are a risk to personal safety. Enter at your own risk. Personally, I'll go somewhere else where they apparently want my business.
Damn that concerned citizen for sticking his nose into a possible bloodbath! Now what will the media harp on for the next month? How will they sell ad space for fast food and rectal creams without blood in the headlines? [Shake]
(/sarcasm)
