Gotta love Hollywood... most of this kind of technology the problem is a small, dense power source. Pound for pound, it's hard to compete with smokeless powder for energy content.

My personal favorite from Science fiction is a MASER (Microwave Laser)... invisible beam, but anything that contains water instantly boils when the beam hits it... also causes nifty fireworks when it hits certain metal shapes- caution required to ensure it doesn't reflect back at you.

Drones with a brick of C4. Nuclear powered laser satellites delivered by Spacex. I got to survive somehow. Smiles.
