Steamboat has a lot of bears in town. I've been spending more time up there in the last year, but even so, I'm far from living there full-time. This being said, I've come within 25 feet of a bear three times in the last year. My condo isn't exactly on the fringes of anything... it's between the Walmart and Alpine Bank. I was carrying stuff from my car to the condo the first time and looked up to see a bear in the grass in front of my condo. I slowly backed up the stairs to my condo and stayed inside until he lumbered off.
The second time, one ambled across the road in front of me as I was merging onto Hwy 40 coming up the on-ramp from Mt. Werner Drive. The last time was about a month ago. My brother and I went out to dinner. We came out and there was a bear wandering around about 10 feet in front of his Suburban. In typical younger brother fashion, my brother wouldn't unlock the suburban doors until I was sufficiently in danger of being mauled. Gotta seriously consider removing him as the sole beneficiary in my Will.
I just accept the bear encounters as part of living in a mountain community. Bears just being bears. As others have said, we're invading their territory, not the opposite. After reading the article, I've decided to swap out the 9mm I keep at the condo in favor of a .40S&W!
Off topic: If you want to be sick to your stomach, take some time reading the Steamboat Pilot newspaper to see how completely freaking liberal Steamboat has become. Honestly, that's been the biggest surprise to me in the last year of property ownership up there. I figured the community would lean more to its farming, ranching, and rodeo roots. Pretty sad.

I was talking with a CPW officer yesterday who said that Lyons is having a lot of bear problems. The late May storm damaged much of the wild berry crop. We're pretty resolute about keeping doors locked when we're inside. And I keep a shotgun loaded with rubber buckshot and double rubber ball rounds.
Here's capture from one of my yard cams of a young bear approaching our electric bear fence at 3 a.m. People of the night. Don't know if the bear contacted the fence. Another cam pointing that direction wasn't triggered by the bear.
