Quantum Fiber

Most observed lag, unless you have a very low end plan, is server side. Size your service accordingly. Fiber/coax is surprisingly competitive, fiber having the advantage of not being susceptible to lightning and up/down symmetry. Backhoes are it's greatest enemy. Been in the business for decades, base your decision on what serves your location best.

In 2023's economy, a $200 Broadband bill, including mobile is not bad. How many of you business owners have been able to keep prices stable for the last 5 years?

Recently, when inquiring about risks to our base connectivity, I was informed that the greatest risk was by "diesel powered cable finders". It actually took me a second to realize he was referring to backhoes.

I live in the vicinity of Woodmen and Union. If backhoe exhaust so much as wafts over that intersection our landline [when we had it] and internet fails.

The most interesting "repair" we got on the landline during the many, many failures from construction of the Woodmen/Union "continuous flow intersection" was getting someone else's number. The most entertaining part was talking to CenturyLink and even though they could see I was calling from some other number, the person insisted that it was impossible.

Took several days to fix. Actually tracked down the owner of the other number and for a couple days I was calling his cell phone to pass on messages left on our answering machine. :)

He and I found it amusing.

Ps. No, he didn't get our number. Our "repair" just caused his phone to go dead.

Do they really give you the 'modem' free of charge? https://www.quantumfiber.com/support...equipment.html states: "Quantum Fiber provides a modem at no cost when you become a customer." It sure sounds like they do, but I'm really surprised they don't make it a bigger selling point. (I had to dig around the website a bit to find that page.) Is what they describe as a "modem" more correctly described as an optical network terminal? Did you get the 360 wifi mesh? Any idea how much it costs? Also, for anyone who's had if for a while, how long did it take for them to start raising the monthly rate?

Most fiber ISP's will provide a router/modem, as they have to provide the fiber to copper media converter for 99.9999% of residential customers. They want to know that the media converter is compatible with their network, and they would rather have a router/modem/media converter that is standard for the sake of their customer support...

I can only imagine the amount of "my interwebby don't worky" calls... Have to support every random POS that someone has bothered to buy from Amazon? No thanks.

Yup, I got a C5500 and two mesh units to locate around the hous-free. I’m very happy with the improvement especially for streaming services.

I got a chance to give Quantum a call. The guy I spoke with (pretty knowledgeable, BTW) told me:

-Yes, the "modem"/optical network terminal is free of charge.
-The 360 w-fi mesh is $15 per month if you want to rent it. You're free to provide your own if you'd like (obviously avoiding the monthly rental charge). They have the required specs listed on their website.
-At my location, he said it would be approximately one week for them to get out and do the installation.
-There is apparently no cancelation fee.

I'm sure most people already know this, but wireless routers can get a bit pricey depending on the specs. I'd imagine there are some reasonably priced options that will still work. If there's some kind of 'catch' to what they're offering, I'm not seeing it, other than the $15 wi-fi rental if you go that route. (It would increase the monthly cost for the 200 Mbps service from $30 to $45, so a 50% increase.) Obviously, I'm not sure how long it would take for them to start raising the monthly service fee. Seems like a pretty decent option at this point...
