Baltimore Bridge Collapse

Some are speculating the navigation system may have been remotely hacked for a "Black Swan" event... but this was not this vessel's first accident... apparently last year they collided with a dock. They obviously experienced some sort of major electrical issues and engine issues from the video. Seems more like the ship was not properly maintained and the captain was incompetent. No reason to be anywhere near those pillars.

The new George Floyd Memorial Bridge will be built to modern standards, with stronger piers or protection systems around the piers that can either absorb or deflect the force of ship collisions.

Even @ 5 KPH, that momentum along with mass, nothing is going to stop that movement. For the naysayers, i've suggested they roll through an empty parking lot @ 35-50 mph, then lock up their brakes. They'd be surprised, on dry pavement how far they travel.

That ship wasn't stopping. OR turning away (even with a working rudder) even given 2-3x the distance they were at.

One thing many people fail to understand- propeller driven watercraft regardless of size don’t “steer” as you think of it- the bow doesn’t move into the intended direction of a turn like a car or similar. The stern “skids” to the outside of the intended direction because of water flowing over the rudder surface and that initiates the turn.
Without thrust over the rudder surface there is no steering.
When it lost power it was a slow traveling multi million ton battering ram.

Most ships that size have bow thrusters.

Thrusters don't work when the power is off. They're electric motors

Not all thruster are electric.

I was correcting the statement that ships solely rely on rudders.

Obviously with a loss of power nothing will work.

With a vessel that size the only time thrusters are going to do anything is putting it to berth at .001 KPH.

Bow thruster is 4000 HP. Correct action is to drop anchors immediately. Even that may not have the desired effect in shallow water. Largest ship I have worked on is the USNS Range Sentinel.
