There are variations of this going around! We got the Time Warner one in the mail.
Best way is to call the bank name on the check they'll either confirm the check or tell you it's a fraud. As for the Time Warner one it's a scam!

Two things to bear in mind when receiving these types of calls:
(1) Legitimate calls from your CC provider(s) will NEVER ask YOU for ANY information - they have it all already. It has become an ever increasingly successful ploy to call and pretend to be the fraud dept of a persons CC provider - esp when they have a little info about who your provider is but not all of it (like the 3 digit code off of the back of the card). If called, get their info and call back using information on the back of your card or from your bills.
(2) ETA: DISREGARD THIS - SNIPER HAS ALREADY SPOKEN TO THIS
Often times the BG's will perform a very small transaction (under $15; sometimes as little as $0.15) to test the waters on the CC they want to use. Once they are satisfied that all is good, they max out the card and anything else they can do. If you see ANY charges you can't substantiate, contact the CC and report suspected fraud ASAP!
Food for thought:
I always use a credit card or cash at restaurants or places where my card has to leave my eye sight. Had a lot of fraud investigators tell me to do this. THe reason being as the credit card is the bank's money, your debit card is YOUR money. Let the bank lose their money through fraud, they will do whatever it takes to get their money back. They don't care about your money when you lose it.
