This is a great thing to do, especially around the holidays. When I was deployed (Navy) and out to sea, it was always nice to get letters from random people. Around the holidays it was great to get care packages from various elementary schools with goodies in them. We had a drawer in our shop that we would put all the goodies and letters into and if you wanted something you had to take one of the letters and write back.
Most of the letters and packages back then were addressed to "any soldier or sailor". I looked up that program and it seems that it is just an email and care package program now. It was always nice recieving a real letter written by hand from someone instead of an email, more personal I guess. We had quite a wall of drawings from elementary school kids in our shop!
