im leaning toward a quick paced , there it is shoot it kind of thing . a heads up or drag race type thing sounds perfect . 2 lanes first to knock over 3 pins wins at 25 or 50 yards . on to the next 2 shooters ect.

I have to assume that you guys aren't thinking about shooting a bowling pin with a pistol at 50 yards. Not impossible, sure, but maybe not ideal for this kind of competition.
i dont think blanks or reloads would work as there would be no restrictions on caliber or type of pistol . this would require everyone to supply blanks , some else to load mags ect . you see where im going with this . it has to be easy on everybody's wallet and all enclusive . everyone who wants to play should and will be allowed to play (provided they pick up trash with the rest of us )
You'd be surprised. 10 yards may not be too close if you are racing someone. We can work something out either way.
How about a dueling tree? Last man standing wins. Or you could do some sort of bracket thing.
I have 5 steel plates that I had made for shooting and they work great. Problem is I currently only have 2 individual stands to set them on. The plates are approximately 5" in diameter and I painted them white on one side, black on the other. If someone else has a way to set up the other three, I can bring all 5 plates. Nothing fancy, they fall down when you hit them. I also have 3 home-made target stands which will support paper targets. I use these in the pistol & rifle classes I teach. Let me know. Take care.
I probably can't make it that weekend but if everyone were to save up their soda and beer cans you would have a bunch of free targets.
Do the drag races, sound like fun. If shooting can, see who get one to jump the highest. Used shotgun shells would work great for accuracy contests.
Make it so any kids that come out can do it too. Keep it fun, keep it simple, keep it safe.
I don't think I can make the shoot.
However, I'd be willing to loan either of these reactive steel targets to the cause if someone wants to pick it up AND take responsibility for getting it back to me:

The one on the left is a dueling tree. Six plates, 3 on each side. First one to clear their side of plates wins. Another neat thing about this target is that it (unintentionally) gives "extra credit", so to speak, for larger calibers. Usually, a hit anywhere (unless it's on the very edge) with a .45 will spin the plate. A peripheral hit with smaller calibers may or may not spin it unless it's a good solid hit. It's a lot of fun and makes for a real easy to judge competition.
The one on the right is a hostage target. The head (meant to represent the bad guy) swivels from side to side when hit.
These are HANDGUN only targets...no rifles (rimfire is OK).
PM me or whatever to arrange pick up if you guys are interested.
