Yet another WTF is wrong with people thread

Byte....Fuck man you said it all. They do need us to guide, protect, and love them but todays parents for the most part don"t care. It bugs the hell out of me about people and the lack of morality in parenting, I for one could not imagine not being a part of a kids / my kids (when I have one) life. I would take the little guy in a second handicaped or not and make the best life I could for him, money or not thats a child.

I really don't understand how someone can sue over this. I do understand that it is something the doctor should have told the parents as soon as he knew(I am assuming he knew), but to sue over it? Sometimes I hate this litigation happy place.

But on the subject, to me it comes down to quality of life. Sure you always want to give them the best quality of life that is possible, but there has to come a point where you question if that best life they can have is worth it. I have let my wife know that if I am ever heavily brain damaged that I would rather die.

It came about because we were watching a show about parents taking care of disabled children and I looked at them and just thought I would rather be dead. Now if I had a child like that I would still try my hardest to make a good life for them, but me personally, I would not want to live like that.

But when it comes to purely physical disabilities I think it is a little harder to know what I would do. Sitting here thinking about it I can't imagine enjoying my life with no arms and one leg(but then again I would be losing them, never having had them would be different), but would I dislike it enough to wish I were dead? Who knows?

I have some friends who's son has no right foot and moderate mental and learning disabilities. Since the foot deformity is rare he has limited use of the right leg and is bound to a wheelchair. He probably won't ever have the chance to succeed at a collegiate level due to the mental issues, and he taxes their emotions and patience daily, but they thank heaven almost daily that they have the chance to raise such a wonderful son and just take the difficulties as a true test of faith and love the kid probably more than parents can love a normal kid. Now, as a caveat, the son is 11 now, and his older sister does more than she needs to with helping her little brother live the best life possible. They didn't know about the difficulties until after the baby was born, and guess what... they didn't sue. Some people make me believe in retroactive abortion.

I get that its hard... I understand that. Little Byte tries my Buttons ALLOT some days. The little guys/Girls need us to protect them, love them and be patient while they learn the world around them. It's our duty to guide them, Love them, protect them and teach them.
If we cannot do that the solution is simple.

Give them to someone that can, someone that will.

Two great posts. Glad to hear he is now doing well.

I also cannot comprehend how some people treat their kids. Everything I do is to provide, teach, and protect mine. Plus it can be a lot of fun and it gives me excuses to buy three of everything, rifles, fishing rods, etc.

I was just rocking my twin sons the other night thanking God for bringing them into my life and committing to God that I would do whatever I had to, to protect them, raise them to be good sons, husbands and fathers. I had tears rolling down my cheek.
The love I have for all my kids is unlike a love I have ever known.

I think you guys are missing the point.

If I was your Dr and knew your penis was going to fall off forever in two weeks and didn't tell you, would you be pissed when you found out? Regardless of the parents decision after the facts arose, the Dr was obligated to tell the parents about the physical deformities if he knew.

Apparently, the jury thought he did.

Sounds like the doctor imposed his morals on the parents by not telling them. I assume the issue was whether he had the right to do this. If they knew going in what the doctor's where then they have no right to sue. For example, my two boys were born at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center and they have a religious policy about birth control. After the second one was born through C-section we considered getting her tubes tide, being that everything was out in the open anyway. Then we realize what the policy was and knew we couldn't. We knew going in that this was the case. The same situation could have happen in the above case, but the parents where unaware of policies (policy of doctor/hospital is anti-abortion) of the doctor involved.

No, I think they would still be in the right to sue and win in this case. Simply because the hospital has a set agenda, the Dr still has an obligation to inform the parents. It's simply not his decision to make through witholding information. His decision is to do or not do a procedure.

There are more details to the story. The mother refused to undergo an ameno (abbreviated as I don't know how to spell the word, and to lazy to look it up)

Anyone who has been part of an at risk pregnancy can tell you this is a good way to detect genetic disabilities in utero. Do I think the Dr made a bad call or pressed his views on the mother? I don't have the time (or desire) to review the entire case and testimony to really answer that.

Abortion can turn into a pretty heated debate and I didn't want to go there. I have my beliefs and others have theirs. What got me so upset is how you can anyone look at his or her child and admit to themselves (let alone in front of a jury) that they would have ended that child's life?
