Saw this some time ago... I shake my head.
Open carry just attracts trouble. Just like my belly button, I don't show mine to anyone unless there is no other choice. [ROFL1]
EXACTLY. The argument I always here proponents for open-carry is: "It's your right and if you don't use it, you lose it". That statement is (as a good friend of mine put it) "...five pounds of unsound attention-whoring bullshit in a three pound bag."
I've said it time and time again, if the assailant sees you're armed and he is dedicated to his actions then congratulations - you are the first to die, bottom line. I DON'T want the assailant to know I'm armed until those copper jacketed hollow-headed friends of mine are their way towards him at a high rate of speed.
Not to mention the looks and alarm caused by open-carrying in a place where the gun fearing public gathers in large masses. In a lot of cases I also have my beautiful 3 year-old son with me and the last thing I need is to draw negative attention to myself while carrying. Here's a thought, say a dirtbag sees you're carrying. You have your child in your arms. So he walks up on you and sticks a gun in you face demanding you wallet, cell phone, keys, etc. So are you gonna risk going for your blaster and possibly causing the assailant to fire and hit your child? I would certainly hope the hell not. Up the anty and say you are out with your wife and child. These are all real variables in ALL of our daily lives. My family and my life are far more valuable to risk bringing un-needed negative attention when I have a firearm on my side. So feel free to condemn me because I don't promote "open carry" and I think it's foolish.
Spot on: Open carry in urban areas is questionable. It just makes the armed person a target for the motivated criminal and needlessly alarms the general public. The open carry advocates forget the most basic rule: surprise + a little skill + motivation = a win. Just my 2 cents.
Squeeze, you pretty much just put it in probably the best terms possible. Why would anyone want to draw attention to themselves as a potential threat when SHTF (and I'm not talking big SHTF, I'm talking in smaller cases like 7-Eleven robberies and the like)? If the BG knows you're armed he's going to either A)target you first, or B)not act there... do you really want to place all your chips on the B bet? I'd rather a BG not know I'm armed until it's much too late to do anything about it. [UZI]
Never had a problem with open carry, I'm also not paranoid. I know several people who open carry without a single problem. Plus, for me anyway, it's a good way to show the libratards that see me that not only "psycho's" have guns.
Valid, because I know that I OC every day I head to work (mainly because my attire doesn't permit CC)... I think by now everyone who sees me thinks I'm a detective or something- I dress in very professional attire (not tie but close) and have my Glock on my hip, so I won't be mistaken for a thug, unless of course someone suspects me of being a crips' accountant [LOL]
I open carry a lot... I do plan out my routes and I move through that planned route quick.
I hate standing in a spot for more than 5 minutes or more, and if I do... I try to keep my ass covered by growing eyes in the back of my head [Coffee]
Not all open carry situations are created equal.
Hiking, driving in the car, mowing your back yard or working around the house... Great places to open carry.
