The Durango/Silverton train ride is a great time. But you have to book it way in advance. I can't remember how expensive it is, but I'd ride it again. There's also train from Antonito, CO, to Chama, NM.

It's a long drive is what it is.

Don't be in a hurry and be sure that the drive is the destination, the Grand Canyon is just a stop on the trip.
