Doesn't sound like I'm alone in my view on the AR rifles and the "KISS" principle:
I have an EoTech on one of them with MagPul sights. I'll usually swap out the trigger guard for a "winter" style guard from MagPul or RRA and maybe a new grip. That's about as "upgraded" as my rifle gets. Standard GI-style sling. No rail. No lasers. No lights. No tactical anything. My favorite is the Colt AR6520 lightweight Gov't Carbine. A2 sights, MagPul grip and trigger guard, standard GI sling.
My advice = lots of ammo and a about a half-dozen (to start) PMags.
