Praise when they do something good, punish when they do something bad. Like others have stated here, someone on Bennet's staff is at least counting responses to see what matters to constituents. That helps them gauge what they can get away with.

The unthinkable events which took place in Newtown, Connecticut are staggering. Like all Colorado families, my family was shocked and deeply saddened by the violence, and my heart is with the victims, their families and the entire state of Connecticut. We must have a real discussion in this country about finding ways to stop these types of senseless shootings. While no one law is likely to prevent a deranged individual committed to taking life from doing so, we should have a comprehensive and civil conversation about finding the right and most effective solutions to protect our communities and particularly, our children. This includes exploring a number of areas, such as mental health services, violence in our culture, and a review of our gun laws.

2) He WILL vote for whatever gun control law that comes down the pike (which will do significantly greater damage to his ability to get re-elected than voting for the Fiscal Cliff bill would have).

This is what I got from Udall

I rather suspect that I would disagree with Senator Bennet's reasons for voting against the Fiscal Cliff legislation (as Zundfolge pointed out, he's a liberal, not a moderate, in anyone's eyes but the Washington Post or MoveOn) but I will appreciate and applaud his voting the right way for once. Hope to see more "correct" votes from him for whatever reason (although I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it).

I think Udalls 1-877 number is appropriate: MUDALL

Yeah, I got the same canned responses form Bennet and Udall as well...[blah-blah]

Even broken clock is right twice a day. +1 for Bennett in this case, but I'm sure he'll screw us on down the road with gun control legislation.
