One of many things that I know from the year that I was on a ship is that running aground is a career ender. Another one was thank god I didn't join the Navy.
The story said they ran into a coral reef. I knew a Coral in the P.I. But she couldn't take on a whole minesweeper by herself. [LOL]
Sad part is that a Mine sweeper unlike other ships in the navy is a fiberglass and wood hull, they do this so that they don't set off mines with a steel hull. If it was a steel hull they probably could have just backed off, being that its fiberglass/wood I am sure they are afraid of tearing the hull. My bet is they have a tanker/fuel supply ship pull up next to her and offload fuel ad supplies to raise her waterline.
I was on the USS Tortuga (LSD 46) when it ran aground during our MEUEX (or maybe SOCEX) in June of 2002. Fortunately I was a Marine Grunt so the whole incident got filed in the "not-my-problem" category.

Only works if you are running in sweep mode, normal cruising and the specialized sonar would be useless. But with GPS and sounding charts I still do not understand how they are maneuvering in areas with reefsQuote:
