I'll probably be able to retire at 110.[Abused]
Work as an "independent contractor"/ under the table for years and make good money doing it. Then around 60 or so become "Disabled' and apply for SSI. You never paid into the system but now you get $2K per month plus medicare.
Seen it first hand. [Bang] I see 58% of my gross after everything is taken out. [shit-happens] Just a thought.
I find it ridiculous that I have to work until I am 67 to receive benefits that I pay for. Mostly because the men in my family tend to die between 60 and 65.
I rate your rant as 4/10 as well - disjointed, hard to follow. I also couldn't figure out why you were ranting about Congress raising the retirement age, which they haven't done (but probably will have to if they want to keep SS solvent in the future).
When Social Security was enacted in 1935, you couldn't recieve benefits until age 65 and life expectancy for men was 59, women was 63. So the plan all along was for the majority of payers to never collect. As health care and thus life expectancy have improved, Social Security has barely changed - you can opt for lower benefits at 62 or hold on until 67 for "full" benefits. That's why it's going broke - more people collecting benefits than the system can support. Personally, I'm not counting on SS being there for me. I'm just hoping the government will still be able to pay my Navy reserve retirement when the time comes. You'd better be saving your own money for your own retirement.
