Simply leave any magnet (key) sitting on the shelf. You could leave any number of magnets on any number of shelves. You would still have to know where to place the magnet to open the hidden lock. To the average scum-bag, it is just a magnet sitting on a shelf.
I would consider hidden magnetic locks over simple magnetic closers simply because I do not want the hidden compartment opening inadvertently - when moving a piece of furniture, or bumping into a spring loaded magnetic door.
If you want to go with a biometric lock you can probably use build something using an Arduino and a fingerprint sensor (like this one) But then you're getting outside the skill set of the average do-it-yourself-er. Also you're making the system dependent on your home's power and/or batteries.

Of course if you don't want to over-complicate things I guess a Simplex Drawer/Cabinet push button lock would work.

Height only works for so long with kids. We put the lollipops on the top of the refrigerator to deter my toddler from illicit snacking. He found a way to adapt and overcome.

Magnetic Reed Switches, with magnet. 10 Pack on ebay for a few bucks. (normally closed type)

12 Volt power supply, (wall wart usually works fine, mag lock doesn't pull much for amps)
Wire the reed switch in line with mag lock, hide in drywall or furniture.
Hide the magnet inside an object like a book or whatever to open the reed switch.
Can also run the system on battery with a charger on the battery. Power goes out, the mag lock stays locked for a long time.

I am not seeing the need for the lock complexity. If the hidden compartment is sufficiently hidden to be undetected, no lock is necessary. If it is detected, a wooden piece of furniture is not that hard to kick apart.
It is clever. However, the paint choice just sucks.
