For me i prep for 2 things, natural disasters and social unrest from any type of event (terrorist, gov shutdown/corruption, etc.)
First and foremost is a natural disaster and loss of basic utilities. Second is civil unrest. My wife, being Type 1 diabetic is the primary focus.
My latest problem is evacuation: what do I do about my freezer if I am forced to evacuate. My sister, who is a rancher, just dropped off a full cow that I have in my chest freezer. If I am forced to evacuate during a fire, my gasoline generator won't last very long so I would lose hundreds of pounds of beef. So, I am looking at possibly setting up a solar system just to power my freezer, which I am now putting in my office/reloading room so I can use the power on other items as well. Eventually, I would like to get a wind turbine and natural gas or propane fired generator.
Start making jerky and salting it. You more concerned about that free cow or you and your family?
PRIORITIES. it was discussed how to deal with pets / cats (IIRC) when you need to get out now. Hey they're part of the family, but realistically, you gonna spend 10+ MINUTES looking for your cat or get everyone to safety? Only you can make that choice, Me, good by side of beef, hello safe area.
No one can prepare for any "disaster" natural or man made. BUT, if you have the basics to get you to Plan B you're better off then 40-60% of everyone else.
Until it's time to GO we're staying put. If and when the GO signal is up what ever is in the trucks and trailers is coming along.
My wife discovering what I actually spend on guns.
Jim, for the most part you are always full of really good information, but seriously...what is up with this post? I didn't post the same stuff I always post; I instead posted my latest thing I am thinking about. I have spent more time preparing for a major event then if I was forced to leave the house a week without power so my latest evacuation notice got me thinking about a few more things. Powering my freezer may certainly not be the most pressing need, but would really suck to lose. if I am in a situation where I need to smoke meet, I have a smoker and a dedicated cord of hard wood for that purpose. If my son needs to leave and I am not here, there is a contingency plan in place with the neighbors and so on. In terms of priorities, I have the big ones addressed; it is the smaller ones that I am looking at now.
I don't think the economy will drive completely over a cliff to take us into Mad Max times, or that the ChiComs will nuke Denver. I'm just not expecting full-on TEOTWAWKI.
Bad weather, HazMat releases, civil disorder, and a side order of people whose SHTF preps involve helping themselves to mine, are my big threat scenarios.
In order of priority.
1) Loss of income. Figure if all else fails we eat off the preps. ( although was informed today by a zombie at work, "you can get money for food from government [facepalm])
2) Natural disaster, bad weather, contaminated water or lack of.
3) Civil unrest or pandemic.
4) EMP or worse.
Forest Fire... I'm surrounded by tree's.
Economic collapse is my big shtf scenerio. Otherwise its mainly for being more self reliant and personal shtf scenerios loss of job etc. Of the few "doomsday prepper" I've watched not one made really any sense or was sensible imo but they did show some good ideas to implement if ever needed.
I was just thinking ( I do that every know and than ) what do you guys think is the greatest threat to us as far as a surviaval situation?? EMP? Flooding? Riots? I could see an uprising against the government happening. Don't know if it will be in our time frame, but I could see it. I was watching the new Red Dawn and started thinking what would be the most plausible scenario that would happen. Just thought it would be fun tod hear your thoughts!
(We all know its gonna be a zombie invasion)
Most Likely Disaster?
Obama staying in office for his full term. The ass-clown needs to be impeached.
Most likely disaster? Jim coming on here and telling you to use the search feature... https://www.ar-15.co/threads/112009-...hlight=prepare
I'm amazed this thread has made it this long without the wrath of Jim.
These stupid newbies!!!!!!!! sorry guys :(
Sorry Jim, I know not what I do....
I agree this is likely, coupled with the ever-increasing resistance to antibiotics... previously minor infections and ailments that used to be curable in a matter of days, are already starting to kill patients again. http://video.foxnews.com/v/2673703168001/cdc-to-release-new-report-on-antibiotic-resistance/
However, that's not exactly the kind of thing you can plan for, other than being a recluse and avoiding contact with others. I think most of us already do that to one degree or another...but even if a huge bug were to take hold of a population, it's unlikely everything in society would break-down quickly because of it.
I still prepare more for a generalized "supply chain" disruption, where grocery stores are not stocked quickly enough for the masses... by simply keeping a few weeks or months worth of food on hand, you're way ahead of the herd. Then by having the means to protect those supplies, you're again, better prepared.
IMHO...
The most likely disaster is the economy shutting down or USD imploding--the economy is a house of cards. While this would be bad for all states, I think it's worse in states like ours where we have more population than agriculture and a government that has tried to shut down energy production.
In a black/grey market, there is only so much of tangible value that can be traded--you need to create tangible value to keep folks alive.
Then you have Denver which presents all sorts of interesting challenges in such an environment. The density combined with the entitlement mentality is a disaster. Imagine a transitional period where the markets just didn't work and the banks were closed. Maybe that lasts a couple of weeks. In Denver that's a complete disaster. In other parts of the state, folks would help each other out and make it through. But the chaos from Denver would spill out and who knows how far it would go?
We always look externally for doom and disaster; asteroids, disease, war. But I think the seeds of what ends America have already been sown. We seem content to let our leadership water and nurture these seeds so I don't see things changing.
If we had solid state leadership, they would be doing everything they could to firewall us from DC right now. To include a massive budget surplus (rainy day fund) and stockpiling food, medicine, etc... They could start looking at ways to establish and protect a post-USD marketplace (because you can't stop it) to prevent crime and create growth. And above all, they should be getting as many people off of welfare/entitlements. Just returning the mindset of self-sufficiency would be a huge advantage and keep people alive.
Just my thoughts... I'm sure some "new thinker" will come along shortly to tell me the economy is great because the DOW is flirting with 16,0000 (again) and they just bought a new truck (on credit).
JM Ver 2.1............
One of the best things about living within 10 miles of the Zero Mile Stone in DC... No need to prepare for a nuclear war.
I will agree, another flu like pandemic will bring a dose of reality to the world. Last thing I read, the Spanish Flu made the jump to humans in Kansas where it went to Ft Riley into troops preparing to ship out for the Great War. It can start anywhere and once it gets moving, hunker down and deal with it, because with or without Obamacare, tens of millions will die.
Rather than preparing for any specific event, prepare to be flexible. Having skills to make use of available resources and forming groups of mutual assistance before they are tested in crisis would be my suggestion.
Your much more likely to have a personal disaster than a large one.
Job loss
Death of a loved one
Structure fire
Major medical issue
Actually having to meet ronin
Etc
As Skip said, to me economic collapse is the most likely disaster which will bring riots, massive health problems, food shortages, etc.
<sigh>
Merged
We all have the things that we fear the most; for some it is nuclear war.
I remember seeing the black and white films, yes I am that old :), as a kid in school showing us how to get below our desks and hope for the best in case of a nuclear attack.
Hmm kind of sounds like the shelter in place mentality of schools today, just saying.
Diseases both local and widespread and how society will respond, panic , about it bothers me the most. The enemy is unseen, insidious and people will lose their minds about it.
The thing I fear more than this is being completely unprepared for "something"
I am a strong believer that if you are secured financially first, you can overcome 99% of the SHTF scenario. Once you are good financially, you can prep for 1 year supply, bunker etc etc for that 1% least likely worst case scenario. So don't forget to invest, save, build wealth while you prep.
Same town has municipal code requiring a firearm owned by head of household unless prohibiteby law.
Edit. You might think that was from the cold war but it was 93 ish
