Went two weeks or so ago.....still nice place to shoot.
FS posted on facebook that they recently had to pick up a bunch of trash.
I went last week and it was trashed! Their was a bunch of fucktards there. I was shooting in the 25yd pistol range and some jackass came in and started shooting his AR, he just threw a paper target on the dirt and started blasting, he would start walking up to see his target while I was still finishing a string. Then I looked over and he was laying his AR on the bench pointed at me. I don't think I will be going back.
Edit: their was trash everywhere, dumb shits shot up the target holders and yard markers. Shotgun slugs everywhere.
Last time I was out there was a few days after a rain, it was pretty muddy. There was quite a bit of trash on the middle range that my daughter and I picked up and took out of there, lots of 1 ltr pop bottles and cardboard. I always bring a rake, a waste pan and a bucket, took a lot of steel case .223 and 7.62x39 out of there. Since we always go early on a week day there are not a lot of other shooters there and so far everyone has been respectful. We are planning on going this Wednesday again in the AM (supposed to be rather cool in the morning) and getting in some pistol practice.
Might be going up there tomorrow, I'll let you know.
I just came back from Pawnee. It was a beautiful day. No wind, perfect temp, and no people where we were. I drove by Baker Draw and it was clean. So I guess someone was nice and cleaned it up.
Weather permitting I'm calling in sick (cough, cough) on Friday and heading out. I'll do a clean up while there. Is there a place to leave garbage bags? Would rather drive the bomber Accord than the 1 ton, so room will be limited to haul out much.
Looking forward to finally checking out the range.

I've only been a couple of times. I don't recall seeing any dumpsters there although they should keep a few there. I've also not seen it overly trashy either. The couple of times I've been it was in pretty good shape. If you do bag up alot of trash, I think you may have to haul it to the Crow Valley (or whatever it's called) campground. I know they have dumpsters.
Thanks. I've hauled pickup bed loads full out of there in the past. Couches, TVs, you name it. I'm sure I could do the same this trip. Just not wanting to drive the truck up and save $80 in fuel.
Was there with the family on thanksgiving and there was no big trash items. It was pretty clean. Every time I have gone on the weekend there is a ranger or sherrif or game warden in the parking lot. Last time we went on the weekend we had to wait for a spot, every bench was full.
Made it out this morning. Was there from about 8-12. I was happy with what they put in. Benches were nice with the adjustable screw seats. Got a few rifles dialed in. Range was actually really clean. (-casings) Picked up a small trash bag full from the 50 yard range before I started. Pretty much all the tubing in the ground for targets were full of broken wood bits. Had my own stands. I was all alone till about 10. Then people started rolling in. Maybe 10 at the max all morning.
I see that have the gate/road closed to the west that runs north. Bummer. That's where we used to shoot and a few of the NOCO put up or shut up shoots.
We went out there this morning but decided to call if off mainly due to the wind. The range looks nice.
Is there a 1k range out there currently?
I'm thinking of heading up here tomorrow morning early. Also looking to scout out a spot in Pawnee. Can anyone get me started with some coordinates or suggestions?
also baker draw is right around there if you didn't know.
Thanks guys
Spot 2 was closed by the forest service as of last winter. Chained gate and posted closing. Haven't been by in a few months.
Edit: The designated area is nice when its not that busy.
I went to the Baker Draw shooting area today with my family. Unfortunately we got there at 10:30am and it was already hot. There was a US Forest Service ranger there to give us the once over. He also mentioned that there are MANY other places to shoot that are unregulated. He was going so fast I couldn't keep up. Had the whole 50 yard pit to ourselves.
Important point of notice: If you're in the right hand lane of the 50 yard pit make sure you ask for a cold range on the 25 yard pistol pit before you check your targets at the full 50 years as I saw more than a few ricochets hit on my side of the birm. With a little hindsight I would chose either the Pistol pit or the 100 yard as the 50 yard need a bulldozer to fill the gap.
Felt safe the whole time, aside from the pistol pit issue but the pistol shooters didn't show up until a few minutes before we were done. I didn't count when there but the web site says 30 lanes 26 benches. The bench chair swivels for LH or RH shooters.
Next time anyone plans on heading there please let me know. My advice is get there at the ass crack of dawn and enjoy before anyone else gets there.
We went out to the range and the ranger was a total dick head and went around and took everyones license plate numbers down. Have been out there many times and never got hassled by the ranger before.
I'm going to try to leave Eldo by 5:30am and if the four winds help I'll be there setting up by 7am Friday morning. I need to dial in my savage and then enjoy the pistol pit. Also bringing the sks just for a really loud bang. Driving a white 4Runner 6' red hair and beard.
Could not have picked a better morning to shoot at Baker Draw. I got there at 7:30am. Cool and windy. Before I could get my target set up I noticed another car pulling in. Lucky for me he was responsible and safe. By the time I left at 9:15am there were 10 people. 6 in the 50 yard and 2 couples in the pit.
Anyone have any idea what the improvements are going to be?
They just put a permanent restroom out there.
Yup, I saw that lat time I was out. I was a little nervous using the porta-johns the previous time out, they were full of holes. A brick sh*tter gives a little more protection than a plastic one.
Just wondering if they had other additional plans, 200 yard range? Shotgun area?
....re-locate prairie dogs at 400+ for unknow distance targets?
My daughter and I got there Tuesday @ 6:45am and had the place to ourselves until 7:30am when a father and son showed up. On the way out I saw someone leaving the closed gates between 61 & 57. Just wondering if there was any interest in setting up for longer distances in the area?
I got to the range at 9:30am but it was closed for installation of lane dividers and cover. I drove around for 40 minutes trying to find a safe spot but all I could find were a few people who didn't know the first thing about safety so I split. Figured it was best to head home to the wife alive and breathing. On the way out I passed the construction supervisor who told me that the only reason they closed the range while working was because yesterday they had to call the Sheriff because an unsafe shooter was making them really nervous.
Range still closed...today and traffic on Hwy 14 eastbound is terrible...waited for what seemed like 20 minutes. It is a single lane road for a bit and then limited to 45MPH...On the way back we dropped down to Windsor from Ault and headed back to FoCo..
Range is open until Tuesday morning when they resume construction http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/arp/recarea?recid=80588
Was thinking of heading up Monday. Is traffic on 14 still bad?
I'd actually go up through Briggsdale, but I was just curious.
"Traffic on an 8-mile stretch of Colorado Highway 14 between Interstate 25 and Weld County 23 east of Fort Collins will be delayed starting Monday for road resurfacing work. The Colorado Department of Transportation says work will limit traffic to one alternating lane for up to 2 miles at a time. Stops of up to 15 minutes can be expected through the duration of the project expected to wrap up by late November.
The speed limit in the construction area will be reduced to 45 mph, and signals will control traffic flow. Fines may be doubled for speeding violations through the work zone."
