A better comparison would be competing at firearm competitions rather than looking down a loaded barrel. It's a dangerous procedure to be sure and there are practices that make it more safe and some that make it less safe. Let's be realistic though... some people are just accident prone regardless of what situation we're talking about.

So your profession of choice requires you to answer the phone? I don't feel sorry for you. If it's that big of a deal choose a different profession. Otherwise it's how you earn a living so comes with the territory. Not trying to be rude... just trying to state the obvious I guess. If something bothers you that much... change it. Not trying to be rude or start an argument... just stating the obvious I suppose.

I've worked in IT for over 20 years, and i've never seen an organization that requires you to immediately answer the phone 24x7 no matter what. Simply let it go to VM, they leave a message, you pull over somewhere, and call them back. Doctors aren't required to answer their phone no matter what.
