Just Googled Lake Powell, dude!!!! Looks like a lot of fun!!
Thanka for the link Dr.Fwd. I used #18. And Lake Powell is a blast if you've never been. Is the water level still dropping a bunch every year?
Trigger, I was using whatever the monofiliment came with my rod, and the only bite I got clean snapped mt line off before I even had a chance to pull and try to hook. After that I assimed that the mono was weak garbage and got something else. Turns out mono is a lot easier to work with though.
Wouldn't a 4-5 lb fish pretty easily break 4lb test mono? That stuff seems pretty weak.
I've landed 8 lb fish with 4lb test mono.
Not all mono is created equal, there are good brands. Also I throw away the first 5' of mono every fishing trip. If it sits in the sun or a hot car it gets brittle. Change your reel of line every season.
You can feel really brittle mono line against your gums, it feels rough due to all the small cracks in it.
That is a good tip, thank you.
Last year the Lake was full, not full pool but pretty close, they said that it was the closest to full pull since they completely filled it back in the 80's.
Not sure what it is this year but I hear that the fishing is different this year in a good way. Cant wait to go........
Set the drag on your reel at 1/3 the breaking strength of the line and it's quite easy to land a fish that's only as big as the line strength.
4 pound line records, as of 2009:
Greater Amberjack - 26 lb, 8 oz.
Dolphin (mahi mahi) - 52 lb, 14 oz.
Black Marlin, 152 lb, 1 oz.
Striped Marlin, 218 lb, 4 oz.
White Marlin, 97 lb, 4 oz.
Tiger Shark, 159 lb, 0 oz.
Yellowfin Tuna, 55 lb, 1 oz.
Now that's impressive!
2freakin hundreds18# with a line that were supposed to break at 4#???!!!! It is damn impressive!
Is that so when the fish pulls, it just lets some line out, then you reel the fish in each time it rests? Interesting...there is so much I don't know about fishing.
That fish I caught, which I believe was a 9" Rainbow Trout, was so easy to reel in I thought that I lost it.
Last trip I've got 24" walleye! That was fun!!
6x and 7x tippit used in fly fishing are in the range of 2-4lb test. I've caught hundreds (ok, ok, its actually thousands) of trout on that light a line. Many were over 4 lbs. Good reel, good line, good technique.
Not that it would be easy to do, but you guys should take a trip to Junction and fish in the colorado - gunnison junction. People regularly pull out 3-4 foot cats and bigger all the damn time. I've never had any luck, but i've been fishing since I was little and maybe only caught a hand full of fish... bad luck...
Congrats stu!
Nothing better than a 4 weight fly rod and ultra light spinning setup and causing hell on beaver pond brookies.
I use the 50lb test line from walmart. It's actually thread. Use to catch a lot of big catfish.
We have caught all our trout on 3-4lb mono. You actually have to fight the fish, not just reel me in. It's more sporty...we have several pics of LARGE trout. Up to 12 pounders, same rigs.
I'll see if I can upload some.
I'm going again tonight.
Good choice, rain makes for good fishing
I waited around too long and was only out there for about 30 minutes.
In your (everyone) experience, do these work as well as live night crawlers in a pinch? And when used, should they be used with a weighted jig?

Bump for question. Site went down and people forgot.
depends on place but they do work well. A lead headed jig is most common. They can either be bounced off the bottom or pulled through the weeds
Any of you want to hit local reservoir tomorrow?
Caught a large mouth Bass today. We were there for 10 minutes tops. I have three more significant bites on the line, and one of them I definitely should have been able to pull in but never snagged the fish. Caught the same way as the trout, with a worm on a hook and a bobber. Simple and effective, I'd like to catch a fish another way. Also, SAFriday, I saw a guy fly fishing in person when we were at Loch Lomand and it didn't look as complicated as I thought. I think I'm going to give it a try.

Nice! Where was it?
There is a tiny little pond behind Water World that is catch and release only. I guess there are Bass, Bluegill, and Crappy in there. Oh yeah, and a family of Beavers or Otters or something.
I'm going fishing right now, gonna go to Cherry Creek and try night fishing!
That sounds fun. Bring a flashlight that focuses into a spot light. If you catch something, let me know what you caught and how you caught it please.
Ok, just got back from cherry Creek. It was a fun experience! Caught 9 walleyes, the biggest was 12" and the smallest was 9.5. All fish were released.
I used night crawlers and leeches. "still fishing".
Awesome Dr. Fwd!
Tonight I caught 3 more Large Mouth Bass and a Bluegill (I thought it was a Crappie). I only have pictures of two of the fish, but the first large mouth was an inch or two longer than the one last night. Also, I think I broke my reel last night, because it doesn't click anymore when the line runs out.

So we went again tonight, and some stupid teenage girl catches at least a 1lb Crappie. I know because my daughter found it LYING IN THE DIRT, still with the bait in its mouth, with the bobber 24" up, and just the line cut off. I know it was that girl, because she told me that she caught "some green and gold fish" and when we found it about 20 minutes later, IT WAS STILL ALIVE! I confronted her about it later, and she said, "Oh, that wasn't my fish."
What the hell is wrong with people? All the trash that people leave around is one thing, but reeling in a fish, cutting your line, leaving it in the dirt, and just walking off? I don't understand. No wonder people hate baiters and spin casters.
Thanks for the poles Dr_Fwd.
