I've had Comcast out many times for exactly the same issue as DOC posted (the hard rests). Comcast has done all the wiring. Each time a different tech finds a different "problem" and I get reliable service for about 4 days, then it craps out again.

Second test.

I usually test it from the modem directly. But it test out the same if I go through the router or wifi. I did pull my own cable and I thought it was cat 6 and I got ripped because its just cat5e. Now that I know what I'm doing ~ I'm going to pull fiber all the way up to the desktop. Talk about future proof (and the insane speed isn't bad either)!!
ETA: Cat5e is the most popular standard and supports high speeds. Nothing wrong with it.
I just have Comcast Internet and watch Hulu or download shows. It's less of a hassle to only have to call them every 6 months to get a 30-40 dollar rate decrease.
That is about average. Is it showing any resets/lost syncs or t3 timeouts in your modems gui? Having to reset the router/ modem is caused by the router a lot of times. If your not getting modem resets/lost syncs trash the router. I have seen the best routers less then a year old take a shit and start dropping the connection. If your cat 5/6 cable terminations are questionable at all I would redo them.
Well going back to 1970 (according to the time stamp) I'm getting those but I don't know what it means?

Surprised nobody has mentioned switching to Dish Network. I used to have their service but moved and my cable is Comcast, but it came with the apartment. As far as keeping the snow off the dish, I was told by a Dish network guy to spray Pam cooking oil on it, the snow will just slide off after that. Worked for me anyway.
It is important to remember that the number of stations on YOUR network will affect the speeds as well as the number customers and the number of machines on Their Networks.
Then you have Network appliances and all of their Quirks and issues.
for example. I run a firewall on a *Nix Platform.
Machines on the "outside" of this firewall are just rocking along
Machines on the inside are a bit slower.

it is important to note that MOST residential consumers never use 50% of the bandwidth that they pay for.
Just as an example.
are you aware that A High Quality VoIP Call uses less than a MB?
It's been my experience that what most customers refer to as Poor network service is usually an overworked router somewhere, or a overworked Server.
Its amazing how quickly people call for repairs when they aren't footing the bill.
Helpdesk: People are saying the Email server is slow, they want you to look at the network.
Me: ??? looks at watch.. 0912hrs, hmm
Me: Checks SNMPc, Checks exchange server logs, Looks at 400 Million attachment downloads from the email server
Me: Tell them I found the problem and it will be fixed in about 20 Minutes.
Me: Goes and gets some coffee :D

speeds are ok I guess, but the cable is spotty and comcast dvr sucks.
No (given what I do for a living, proper systems and wiring is not an issue); In my case though I was willing to concede that, so I plugged the modem straight into the network interface on the outside of my house and disconnected the rest. Problem continued, and they still tried to tell me it was my fault/issue despite being able to point to *their* shit wiring job visible from the f'n street. I'm in the middle of Denver suburbia, so the area signal should be fine here.
I know some people are unbelievably stupid when it comes to hooking up their computer equipment, but I've been in telecommunications and network engineering for almost 15 years now and know a thing or two about the topic; to be treated like some total idiot and get jerked around because of sheer apathy on their part isn't just offensive, it tells me they don't give crap one about my business. That's fine though, I don't feel any need to continue giving it to them. :D
every time I run the test it shows better and better results. LOL

Nice Dr. FWD.
Here is about as good as I get.

If I could use my full bandwidth potential I would but they have a cap set at 250 gbs a month and some months I come close. I don't want that kind of red flag shot up around me.
I dont know you so I am not saying its "you", but IT and tech guys are the worst at fucking shit up (almost as bad as electricians)! There is so much involved in hooking 2 pieces of cable together it is ridiculous. I do realize there is cable guys that cant do it correctly and that cant troubleshoot problems correctly also. Electricians and IT guys will put bad fittings on unshielded cheap cable and hook it together with a super duper high dollar splitter from home depot and think its perfect. Then they wont let the cable guy even inspect it when he is there on a service call. What they don't know is they scored the center conductor when they used that POS wire stripper, the fitting isn't on properly, the cable is crap and the splitter is junk. All they are doing is losing to much signal and allowing so much ingress onto the system that nothing works right. There TV's tile, the digital boxes dont work right and there modem is constantly dropping off line.
So if you do your own wireing I am sure you have a meter to check signal level both upstream and downstream, ingress, MER and BER right rforsythe? About 90% of the time the problem is coming from the house wiring.
Stuart what kind of modem do you have, is it a Scientific Atlanta, Cisco or teryan (I dont know the correct spelling right now)?
<---For the record cable guy.
I like my motorola surfboard. It doesn't suck to much.

What do the numbers mean?
Edit: I understand upload and download... but what is the average speed?
The test run on work comp... looks good? Then why does my comp feel so SSSLLOOOWWW?!?!? lol.
Hardy har har.
No, I'm just whining, the computers are slow here because of security and this and that, blah blah blah crap. Plus, they are typical "gooberment" computers, not exactly the state of teh art equipment.
As far as the pron.... 10 more minutes. Oh baby.
I kid.

I know this post started out as a TV issue, but has kinda switched to an internet issue. That said, how many of you have Qwest Fiber and is it worth it? I'm sick of paying for Comcrap and want a viable option and DSL isn't it. As you can see my speed isn't that good. Qwest's web site claims fiber will be in my neighborhood next month. Already have Diect tv so I am hoping to bundle. Tried looking up reviews and found none. So who's got it and do you like it?
