?Two ?country hicks? came to Harvard and wanted to talk with the president. A haughty secretary resisted the couple and made them wait for hours. In exasperation, she finally asked the president to see the visitors, which he did if for no other reason to get rid of them. The couple told him their son had attended Harvard for a year and he had loved it, but had been killed in an accident and they wanted to build a memorial to him. The president discouraged them, saying they couldn?t erect a memorial to every student who had died. The couple said they were thinking of donating for an entire building in their son?s honor. The president discouraged them and mentioned how much all of the buildings at Harvard were worth. The lady commented to her husband that if that was all it took to build a university, they ought to construct their own. So?Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford went to Palo Alto, Calif., and built a school in honor of their son ? a memorial to a student that Harvard no longer cared about.?
Enjoyed cataract surgery today with an interocular lens implant that should vastly improve vision in my left eye. Had the other eye done 10 years ago. First time it was under general anesthesia, this time without which was a little weird and a bit stressful. Still looking forward to the results.....
I read that in ~20 years lens implants will be widely available that have zoom and macro vision capabilities. Can you imagine the possibilities?
Hummer.
hope you have a speedy recovery with significantly better vision for shooting.
...and bird watching.
Hope you heal up soon!
Yea, both of those. Thanks, guys!
My eyes are still dilated but now I can see better with my new corneal IOL lens without my glasses than with them. So, I might remove the one glasses lens tomorrow for driving. The eye needs to adjust to the new IOL interocular lens implant. It will be a month before I'll get an eye exam for new corrected glasses.
Ha! True, no doubt. I was telling the doctor how my previous eye lens implant gave me an image that was ~20% taller/more vertical than my natural eye. He replied that he'd never heard of that before. I said it's okay because my wife was suddenly more slender than before the procedure. Win-win. (Isn't that what I paid for?)
Two days ago, I carried for the first time in almost four months.
Found out last week that super doc is gonna take the plate back off my thumb after six more weeks of PT. Circle jerk bullshit....thanks for putting it on in the first place, asshole.
Shit, is this the end of Ho thread?
Shouldn't be.... but it kinda seems like it.
The wind here at the house is insano right now, this is a powerful system.
Let's see if I can set a record on my weather station tomorrow
The weather has certainly been 'interesting'.
Been pretty wet up there lately for you guys, G.
I have a nice system still in a box somewhere....I should get it set up when it warms up again. I don't think it's Davis, but I know it's a good name.
It did snow here overnight but less than 1 inch....been listening to lots of slide offs and accident closures on the scanner of west and east bound I 40 east of Flag. And I 17 south of Flag.
I finally got my scanner charged up and dumped all the channels from CO and reloaded channels down here, nothing is encrypted or trunked TGs...all FMN.
I used a few pieces of chainlink fence top rail for the main pole, guy wired out, then built the base out of chainlink fence posts (actually, 1 post cut in half), connected together with square tubing, spaced a little apart. Mounted the base in concrete, then drilled the base and attached the pole so it would pivot, and set the 2nd vertical attachment up with a u bolt.
When the batteries die, or it needs other maintenance, I can go pull 1 guy wire and the u bolt to lean the whole deal over.

I currently have it set to 20ft, bit could be scaled up.
Guy wires are attached to screw anchors (tractor supply), turnbuckle, and little clevises
Thanks. I like it.
Thanks for those. I have a 20-30 ft. flagpole in front of the house in my plans.
I initially used 2 u bolts, but decided it was overkill.
I set it in the ground to tilt directly west, as in my case, orientation of the station is important, so it was easy to line up
The one bolt top/center is used to get it vertically level east to west, since the top rail isn't the exact same size as the posts.
The 2 sections of top rail are simply epoxied together
If you do set one up, just make sure to set one of the 3 guy wires directly opposite of the way it lays down so you only have to pull 1 wire and the built to drop it.
The first idea I had seems less than optimum now.
Nice set up, did you end up recording a new high wind speed?
Hell naw. Hit 34.8 this morning, right after it rolled in. Record for me was either 78 or 82 a couple years back.
I do need to move the guy wires up closer to the top on the pole, it shakes a bit in gusty wind on the last 5ft or so. Not a huge issue, but if it's raining, the shaking makes the precipitation gauge count too much

Wind is a bitch for most stuff.
Power been out since 345am. REA says working on it but no ET on restoration.
Gonna wait til day light to mess with back up power.
Rural folks losing power is a bigger deal than those that live on city systems....I hope it was restored relatively quickly.
Wife spent the last couple of days in the kitchen making x-mas goodies, looking forward to delivering them to a few folks around here. I did help decorate a good part of it tedious as it is.
Not that I give too many shits about bakery stuff, but I learned that the basic ginger bread man shape can be turned into a reindeer laying on his belly looking up at you with googly eyes.
It is kinda funny.
Must murder bunnies!
These little bastards chewed up the harness in my wife's car, so I fixed it, and sprayed a bit of so called repellent in there.
They came back and ate the repair.
He's so skittish that if I even touch the doorknob to end him, he bails.
Did a few repairs on rock chips using a rain x kit. Some came out well the others look better but not fixed. Cant tell how it will turn out and seems a gamble.
Thinking about buying a ?pro? kit for better results. Maybe after Christmas.
Ran into one at a customer site Dec 6.
It went something like this:
Policy was "masks while moving."
I walked out of their data center with my laptop bag on my shoulder, jacket on the same arm, laptop, power brick, and mouse under my other arm.
Zigged when I should have zagged and had to walk by some cubicles I normally would have avoided. I had forgotten to don my placebo (mask).
As he points at his mask, guy yells at me, "Where's your mask?"
I reply, "I think it's in my pocket" and keep walking.
He comes out to the hallway and barks, "Come here!"
I stop and turn to face him as he's marching towards me. He gets a few feet away and barks at me, "Who are you!"
I calmly and politely reply with my name and company name (I'm wearing a company shirt). He proceeds to berate and talk down to me about wearing the stupid fucking mask, blah blah blah. I say, "Sorry, my hands are full, I will put it on when I get in the cubicle." (masks were not required to be worn at the desks. Maskhole is more blah mask this blah mask that blah. Obviously he's created more risk by closing the distance.
When he's finally done with the word vomiting, I say POLITELY, "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name."
"I'M GARY!", as he turns red and walks off in a huff. Most surely to go write a scathing email, signed: Ken. He most certainly is the self appointed mask Nazi there.
I ask my contact WTF is this guy and he doesn't know. Says there's no C-level management there that he knows of, just contractors, a few employees so he's probably a team lead or something.
I say, "I'm sure we'll all be hearing from this "Maskhole."
The next morning, everyone is wearing masks at their desks, LOL. Didn't think much of it.
Fast forward to today. I get a call from my direct report manager and apparently this asshole complained and it got back to the Account rep. Guess I missed a call from her on the 10th and she thinks I ignored her. No follow up mind you. He's cool, knows me and that I'm not "confrontational," as maskhole reported. Relayed the whole scene above to him. Mind you, I've also had exactly 2 days off in the last 30 so I've been busting my ass on top of this.
My mgr and another that's on the client account got on the phone with the rep and I guess she got real shitty with them when they told my side and, rightfully, defended me against this corksoakers allegations (they both got my back for sure).
I really would like to go back there and punch that sniveling MF in the face. I can retire any fuckn time I want at this point so while it's water off a duck's back, the rep can take her shitty attitude and go fuck herself with an Omicron soaked cactus.
