It's the static electricity created by the rotors moving through the air. All rotary wing aircraft do it, it's just more visible at night. That's the reason you have to ground first before ever touching a SPIES rig or slingload hook of the aircraft is in the air.

Try hot fueling a helicopter at night, the arc from hooking up the grounding clamp will make you crap your nomex suit the first few times.

Some of the worst electric shocks I've had were from static on the radio antennas on the Bradley during bad dust storms.
