Those were damned big airplanes, for fighters! When I was a kid a local guy had one hangared at our airport, I used to ride my Honda out there to go gawk at that big sumbitch every chance I could. I'll never forget the stencilling on the cowl for the oil capacity "21 GALLONS". That always blew my mind, 21 freakin' gallons of motor oil!

That guy was Doug Champlin, heir to Champlin Petroleum. He went on to build a huge warbird collection, and founded Champlin Firearms, makers of extreme high-end custom rifles and shotguns.

It wasn't a ripoff, it was a movie that was explicitly set in the same fictional world as Cars, and John Lassiter, the writer/director on Cars 1 & 2 was the Executive Producer on Planes.

I don't do movies anymore. No point in payin 12 bucks to take a nap. I think I'm borderline narcoleptic...I can't stay awake in a movie theater to save my life

Just the battle scene alone with skippers squadron and the Japanese fleet makes planes better then cars

There were broad storyline differences between Cars and Planes (hotshot jerk learns the value of hard work and humility vs. young upstart perseveres to follow a dream and overcomes adversity), but in general all American kid's movies are going to deal in broad character archetypes and storytelling forms that have proven to be successful in the past. PIXAR has managed to generally buck that trend in most of their movies, but not in ways that people tend to notice.

While I'll agree that Planes wasn't a tremendously groundbreaking story (it was just a cartoon version of Rudy), I did find that it was executed competently at every level. That said, I think it was tremendously gutsy of the writers to insert a battle scene from the Pacific theater in WWII, complete with gunfire, death and suffering into the middle of a kids' movie.

That said, it goes without saying that if you wanted truly original children's storytelling, you probably shouldn't be watching anything from Disney in the first place.

Yep, if you want a truely original storyline, watch Avatar.

What is this "paying" of which you speak? Haven't paid cash money to watch a movie in ages ... just watched the latest Hobbit movie the other night and will probably watch Lone Survivor sometime this weekend as well.

We enjoyed Planes and thought it was significantly better than Cars 2 (of course a good bowel movement is better than sitting through Cars 2).
