We had a guy of Jewish descent on the detail in Jerusalem who went native. Straight up joined the Haredi community and disappeared for several months. The next time we saw him he was on a counter-intel video protesting outside the US Consulate (the De facto Embassy for the West Bank so it attracted a lot of negative attention from the hardline right). He ended up getting arrested by the Jerusalem police and received the old wood shampoo. The RSOs said he was crying about being and American citizen and had rights (etc. etc.).
All that to say, act like an asshole in a foreign land and you just might treated the same way they treat any other assholes. It never occurs to some people that "but I'm an American" isn't a magic talisman that gets you out of trouble.
I've seen all sort of worshipers. I've seen Saddam, Chavez, and Jong-Un (friend of Rodman) worshipers praising them. Nothing really new, but this dude goes pretty far.
