Filet of tag this year on Colorado elk this year. Hoping for better luck with the Wyoming tag. Beautiful country but we ran out of time to chase the cows at the necessary elevation.
Answer: Obv. don't consume until results come back. And yeah, I recognize it's a picture thread. Response is to emphasize the importance of the subject, because there are too many hunters that don't dig into it, and don't test, because there's nobody that tested positive in the news yet.
It's not alarmism,. Like all knee-jerk reactions, yours is typical of all entrenched positions and why it takes extra effort to get other hunters to understand the importance of testing. YOU CAN'T COOK IT OUT. The prions outlast 1,000+ degrees F. Or ten years in the sun. Or... anything. They aren't pathogens.
And no, "if it hasn't already" is factually accurate. Related diseases have a 20-40 year incubation in the same circumstance. They've proven it can infect monkeys. If you go can go cervidate to primate, that's such a huge leap that the difference between chimp and human is splitting hairs. Sure, there's no documented case of a human with CWD, but ever known a family to send their loved on'es head to be tested for it ? If it makes the jump, we won't know for a decade...or two, or more, as CJD - variant is the generic human name for essentially the same condition - which about 80% of human fatalities are unattributed cases of even now, e.g. they don't know how they came across the prions. And there's no prevention, vaccines, treatment or medicine by that point. It moves fast once it's active, terminal. But, why bother making educated decisions when you can just make biased assumptions!
Back to topic. Sorry for the hijack and nice pics folks. Just trying to get people out of their box to do their own research.
TrnCO congrats! Thats a nice bow buck or any buck for that matter. Did you get that guy by your house?

Well, I've managed to fill one of eight tags I've had this year. Disappointed, but at least I spent some time in the field, gave the state a lot of money, and picked up other people's trash. Silver linings.
