They let one go to relay the message to the rest: Don't mess with the Ruskies.

Send a real message by lining them up, offer the first the chance go free by killing his 9 buddies. He passes, make the same offer to the next guy. And so on and so forth.

Ya, they may have shot them, but they damn well sunk that boat with the bodies still on it.

I don't agree with everything the Russians do, but if this is on the mark then good on 'em. Probably wouldn't take too much of this to make them re-think their career choice. I think we should take a page from the Brits and Germans, and put together a few "Q" ships and let the pirates have at them. Let 'em go running up on what looks like a helpless old merchant ship, and then when they start shooting drop the sides of the superstructure and open up with 40mm Bofors and maybe a couple of 20mm Vulcans. There ought to be a bunch of Vulcans in the boneyard, they can just take a few and adapt them. See how long it takes for them to lose their appetite for piracy after some of that!

I really hate large bodies of water, and the wife is real damn tired of being a single parent, or I would have taken the offer. The money was definately right.

Anything to try to make them look more like an appropriate and official entity.

The "spokeman" makes it sound like the pirates were interupted in the middle of a legal and sanctioned activity.

I was under the impression that the pirates at least have small arms like AK47s that they fire at the ship while the other guys board.

Did these pirates never hear of Russia's international reputation for kindness and understanding? They had to have known this was not going to end well for them..
