A true zombie slayer carries short shotty anyway! [Beer]
I pieced together my 870 on the cheap with the specific intent of cutting it to 12", but I got laid off and haven't been able to do it yet.
So I went out today and shot up the pins! I set them up first from 5 to 30 yards. I found out that I'm not as bad of a shot as I thought. I could knock down all the pins out to just past 30 yards with my full size CZ, but seriously had trouble hitting them at only 5 yards with my S&W M&P40c. I guess it's time for a new carry gun. Other people can't shoot as well with that gun either.
Anyway, then I marked out 400 yards. I could have done 600, and actually out to 1 mile, but no need to bother with a .22lr. *For mile long shots, I think you'd need a little elevation, like shooting from the roof of a pick up while standing in the bed, and there would be some gaps due to rolling hills.* So I only set up the pins at 50,75, 100, 150, and 200 yards.
With the Mossberg US 44(a) with original peep sight, I was able to get lucky and hit pins at 100 yards every once in a while, and consistently hit them at 75 yards.
With the (borrowed) Savage Mark II (pre accutrigger) I was able to get lucky and hit pins at 200 yards, and my best at 150 yards was 4 pins in 5 shots. The scope is the cheapest Simmons scope you can get at Walmart in the airsoft and paintball gun section. I think it is like 4x15 or something. On both of the long shots, I couldn't really see the pin through the sight/recticle, and was just guessing with the wind and walking myself in. I've never shot at a distance before and don't really know what I'm doing, nor did I attempt to calculate bullet drop or anything (don't know how).
So, while nothing spectacular, I had a lot of fun since this is the first time I've actually taken the time to measure out distances. I had lots of fun. I guess it's time to pick up a .308 with a real scope as soon as I get a career job again. I took pictures, but with the crappy cell phone pictures, you can't see anything anyway.
Oh yeah, and I was using those little orange flags you stick in the yard to mark distance. I was surprised how much easier it was to see those tiny orange flags than it was the white pins. I'm bringing a can of orange paint next time I go up for sure.
EDIT: I also caught two toads (did you know there were toads at Pawnee?) a snake, saw a nice male antelope (he's always there), rolled up about 1/4 mile of barbed wire, and herded some cows....with my car. It was a long day. Didn't see any rattlers or prairie dogs though.
Pins set up for pistol, and my car at 400 yards; shooting from the car to where I was standing. Sorry I didn't bring a real camera today; I sure could have used it.
