Summertime 'Stan packing list

Just a couple of thoughts. The new Combat earplugs are great and easy to use compared to the old "twist" ones. 6515-01-576-8869

The last guys I sent was in 05 but they did not know how to maximize space in their bags to get there. put groups of soft stuff together and get some heavy trash bags and a vacuum cleaner handy. Mark the bag/put your stuff in it and suck it down. Tie it off and get all your crap in the duffle ASAP. This gives you more space for you in the bag. It also keeps stuff from getting wet and dusty because it never rains on a bunch of bags sitting on the tarmac now does it?

Mason - The Batt boys have been playing this game for almost 11 years now and they're good at it. This is your first time to the big show. Take what you're issued, do what you can to keep the weight you are carrying day to day to a minimum (your Team Leader will almost certainly help here).

Pre-stage comfort items (new socks/tshirts/skivvys, dip/cigarettes if you partake, beef jerkey, etc) with friends and family to be shipped as needed. An external hard drive with movies and TV shows is great. Use a separate drive for your porn because that's going to get passed around like a two dollar whore.

Make notes on what you use/don't use/wish you had. If you have an urgent need let me know. I'll be in country until September and we'll get you what you need by hook or crook.

baby wipes and reading material. i kept all of my stuff on a kindle and downloaded a ton of stuff onto it so i would always have something to read.

What years did you serve in Afghanistan or Iraq?

The one thing I took to Iraq that most don't think about but it paid off was custom molded ear plugs with sound channels in them. They would allow me to talk to my team members without them having to shout and I could hear everything but whispers. Armored Humvees and MRAPS are Fn loud. Without comm gear, you can barely hear each other when rolling down the road. The ear plugs cut out all the garbage noise and I could still hear my team members. The also worked in a firefight.

Along with head injuries, sight (I wore eye protection even at night, Oakleys with multiple lenses) and hearing loss are serious issues in the war zones. Firefights are loud, explosions are even louder and pops your ear drums without hearing protection.

There are a couple of places in the front range making custom molded ear plugs with hearing channels in them. Big Ear is in the springs, and Jim and Connie Betrus (J&C Custom Ear Molds, LLC) are up north. I have sets from both and they are both great. They worked way better than headsets for me.

Thanks for the advice and info yall. Read through the posts and links, did a shopping run, got a couple logs of Cope and some fresh homemade honey-glaze jerky packed away, and I feel like I'm as ready to go as I'm gonna get. Might be on now and then, might not... not sure how easily I'll be able to access the Internet (if at all).
