Regan was also elected at a time when women and minorities did not show up to the polls in large enough numbers to sway the vote. This is no longer the case and women and minorities make up a very large percentage of the voter base today.
I know several women who voted conservative in the past but now vote for democrats because of the republican stance on abortion. Many of whom are prolife but strongly believe that the choice should be made by the person and not by a legislator because a politician has no right to tell a woman what she can and can not do with her body. First we start with abortions and then we start limiting the types of birth control a woman can use, the age a women is allowed to start taking birth control, etc. etc.
If the Republicans want to win another presidency they need a candidate that will come center on social issues. Abortion is a HUGE social issue and will cost future elections if the Republican candidates do not back down on the issue.
Exactly. I had debates with female friends about this and they all voted for O exactly for this reason. Paraphrased: "I cannot vote for someone who is opposed to supporting women's rights." I explained that it was more likely for O to take away rights than R, but they were firm. Don't forget that 99.99999% of election issues are emotional. People don't use their brains because the advertisements don't WANT you to use your brains. O proved that point... so the Republicans better get that through their collective thick skulls or they will drive themselves into mediocrity for the next decade. We ALL lose if that happens.
The biggest problem is that both the D's and R's refuse to come to center. They feel like they have to go more extreme. Sure, the R's won the support of the extreme and religious right, but they lost a lot of center leaning conservatives. Remember, a vote for O wasn't necessarily a vote for "free stuff" (though don't get me wrong, that played a big part) it was also a vote for the status quo. They were wrong, and stupid, because now O feels he has a mandate to do stupid shit like raise taxes, but really, that's what they were hoping for.
few clicks in the direction of libertarianism, and the gop would probably have a majority almost everywhere.
