Ok, I must be completely ignorant. What part of the transaction was illegal?

Hypothetically if he called the cops on the spot and said they tried to buy the rifle with fake identities, could they have been arrested and charged? Would the local PD or sheriff actually show up?

Oh, if only they could have met up with an ATF agent selling a SBR or SBS..... Now that would have made for some good TV.
