Are you talking about my wife also???

Seeing as how The Economist is very left-wing, this isn't surprising.
(Hell, they once advocated getting rid of the House of Lords for a very dumb reason. They were arguing that people whose specialties were in, for example (since I can't remember specifics) the military shouldn't be making health care decisions. I wanted to yell at them, "So, rather than have a body with a diverse skillset, it's better to have a body whose only skill is politics?")
I have an idea to encourage the politicians in DC to get off their dead asses and do their jobs: Not only do they not get paid during the "shutdown", but all of their benefits are suspended for the duration (Travel, security, staff, etcetera), and all of their assets are frozen, period. The can lodge in a dormitory at Annapolis, eat in the chow hall, ride a bus to the Capitol, period. If I didn't do my job for 3 f**king years, that's be more than I got. Alternatively, they could be fined for all salaries and benefits they accrued in those 3 years. They need to figure out that they cannot continue to spend 30% more than the government takes in in taxes indefinitely. Sooner rather than later, there needs to be deep spending cuts, along with responsible oversight to ensure that the Government gets good value for the money it spends.
I guess Harry Reid hates kids. They passed a bill to support paying the troops during the "shutdown," but he won't do the same to support childrens' cancer clinical trials by the NIH. When asked if he would support it, he said "Why would we want to do that?" http://hotair.com/archives/2013/10/0...s-with-cancer/
Two thirds of my division was furloughed - including both of my bosses. At least I have a sweet parking spot close to the N-NC building (while I'm not getting paid....)
Just found out this shutdown is finally going impact my life personally. Luckily I am use to the hurry up and wait lifestyle but it's horrible timing on my career
I'm late to this thread and sitting here on furlough. Normally I would be making sure that the satellites that guide your GPS work they way they should. Who exactly do you all want to tar and feather or lynch?
I wish I knew Obama had this much fence lying around during the immigration debate.
all of them. this is a pissing match politics game. the democrats need to give up on obamacare and the government can resume its normally scheduled programming. until that happens I hope they keep it shut down. If people blindly follow a GPS off a cliff because it is off a few degrees then darwin has done his job. The aircraft I fly have backups for use without GPS and I have done it before and will do it again. I'll make it work out.
Obamacare needs to be repealed in its entirety. It is another shitty social program that will cost us billions, add more fuel to the fire for people to not have any incentive to get a job and quite contrary it will make them want to not have a job and live the lifestyle off the backs of everyone else who will have to work extra hard to keep their same lifestyle if that is even possible.
Obamacare is the same as welfare, section 8 housing, obamaphone, medicare, medicaid, food stamps/EBT, social security, blah blah blah.
All of those programs could go away and people could be responsible for their own selves. they save for their retirement or get a job at a company who has a retirement benefit. Get your own healthcare, pay doctors in cash or get private insurance just like car insurance, life insurance, home insurance, renters insurance and everything else you want to insure. someone on welfare might pay for car insurance but they won't pay for their own health insurance and that needs to be a government benefit....fuck that.
don't worry though, my opinion won't mean shit soon, you can get back to staring at the screen showing the position of the satellite and all its automated systems, the politicians will have a big celebratory dinner celebrating their agreement to get everything back up and running and talk about how important they are to running the country, and I will continue working like I always do except another little cut into my paycheck will take place. death by a thousand cuts....
Again, a good way to understand "essential" is, would someone be in working on that task right now if there were 4-6 feet of snow outside with 30-50 mph winds? There are a lot of tasks that need to be done but that can survive a day or 2 or 3 without someone tending to it. There are other tasks (e.g., ER doctor or nurse, air traffic controller, guard at critical national security resources) where you can't just look out the window, say the weather is shitty and you're taking the day off. "Essential" jobs are the ones where someone has to be there right now no matter what.
That's the funniest part of how his administration is approaching the shutdown. They're doing the Clinton approach of making it as painful as possible but again, going ten steps further. I think they may have overreached and shown their idiocy to the point that even the lamestream media has to notice when they spend actual payroll dollars to close down something that not only takes no federal funding to keep open (e.g., open air monuments) but produces federal revenue (e.g., private monuments and museums). It's one thing to say the shutdown means there's no one to process your passport or NFA form or to cut the grass but it's a whole other thing to say they're putting up barrycades and running rangers around to write tickets because people are walking onto an open air monument or National Park land.
My gps has been freaking out all week. Garmin unit.
They just pick and choose random sectors to shut down and furlough. Everyone in those sectors gets pissed each time, then when they see other sectors getting it they get pissed again because they know what it feels like. hit every group and you touch a whole lot of people. One more problem with the government....waaaay too big.
Good! Maybe people can learn to read a map again! Not likely Im sure, but I can hope. I cant beleive how many people know their address (dont know street avenue or drive tho) but do not know how to give directions to get there, or even the name of the nearest cross street.
Well, if anyone is feeling particularly saucy or troll-ish, how about giving "Rent-a-cade" a call to tell them you don't appreciate their role in all this? [snow]

What's that Edmund Burke quote about what it takes for evil to triumph? Something about good men to stand by and.....profit?
And believe me, I take the side of business over almost everyone in most circumstances. But this is ridiculous. Ethics and common sense and integrity mean more to me than a few bucks on this one. That's just me, though.
I like compromise. Compromises means that no one gets everything they want. Here is my suggested compromise:
Raise the debt ceiling and permanently defund the ACA.
or
Keep the ACA and no increase in the debt ceiling. The Senate Democrats and the President can figure out how to fund the entire government and the ACA within the current legal federal debt limit.
Either way, this is all still a small issue compared to the pending debt service issue the US will face WHEN interests go up.
Be safe.
Please don't be as short sighted as the politicians. Your GPSs are working with old technology. The new GPSIII constellation is supposed to start lauching in 2015. Let me amend my statement to say we are working to ensure that your GPS is working 10 years from now.
I work in quality assurance. No products move unless we sign off on them. In the earlier shutdowns QA was considered essential and we worked not knowing if we were going to get paid. This time everyone in my command is furloughed unless they are paid with funds that do not need annual appropriations. That means that our "Keystone program" interns are working while the people who are supposed to train them sit at home. All emails get an out of office reply telling them to contact our commander, a USAF full Colonel. Only the trainees and military are there, none of who can give the okay for products to move. Billions of dollars in satellites, airplanes, tanks, munitions, uniforms...all of it is just sitting. I didn't draw a short straw, we all did.
I'm glad the republicans did this, but I can't figure out why they did it. We all know they're going to fold and do everything Obama wants, and so unless they intended to go all the way with this it's pretty pointless. And I know they don't intend to go all the way.
If anything, Obama gets more out of this than he would have otherwise. Maybe that's the reason? How do you appease the tea party while at the same time giving Obama everything he wants, and more? Because I know the republican parasites want the same thing Obama wants, but they also want to get re-elected. They can say "we fought it as hard as we could!" They couldn't have said that without a shutdown.
My e-mail to Bennett and Udall (not that they'll read it):
Quote:
The way President Obama and Senator Reid are creating an artificial budget crisis to score political points is unconscionable.
It is beyond ridiculous that the Administration has paid to barrycade open air monuments and parks much less attempt to close facilities that require no federal funding to operate. The fact President Obama chose to fund NPR over the NIH is downright evil.
I demand you vote -- and pressure Senator Reid -- to fund government functions all sides agree are critical and necessary. You can convene a conference to discuss funding the functions that are disputed
Can anyone find the secret message?

I think the Scorpions sang about that secret message.
Just in case nobody really picked up on that reference....
It was double entendre actually... Yes, hurricane related of course.
AND....the song is about someone doin' some fuckin', and someone getting fucked.
It is sad that many regular good hard working folk, are being affected by the "shut down". I don't like that, not cool.
But when do we, as a nation, plan to get the fuck out of debt? Sure, lets blame the dems for hard prick dick sucking wanting to GIVE everybody everything, and blame the Rpubs for BLOCKING progress and hurting all these folks by squabbling about bullshit.
Quick, everybody!! Lets get all these horrible elected officials who retain their fat cat fucking salaries and high end healthcare, and non social security paying fuckwads.....to all agree to RAISE the debt ceiling again, so we can keep doling out money to useless fucking nations, in all kinds of full retard aid....for what? A base with a few airstrips in a strategic location? Some backing in the U.N.? (which we fund most of anyways)... fucking PR?........ gobs of money for disasters around the world, and when shit hits the fan here at home......Bullshit response, our own people in really bad shape....the nonsense horseshit will never end. Sorry, a little ranty there... but...
When are we gonna fix our own debt? Fix the books here FIRST...we have to. Keep passing the buck...NO.....is it gonna hurt? Yes.
I say start now.
